Description
Antibiotic sensitivity discs are 6mm paper discs impregnated with determined amounts of antibiotic. They are clearly marked on each side with a code, which designates the antibiotic name and concentration. They are used to measure the semi-quantitative susceptibility or resistance of a pathogenic microorganism to a particular antibiotic. In order to minimize variability in this testing, the Kirby Bauer Method became a standardized procedure in which Mueller Hinton Agar is used as the test medium. Note, however, that special procedures and test agars are required for testing pneumococci, enterococci, methicillin-resistant staphylococci and s/b beta-lactamase tests.
